Gurgaon: Two men who worked for a wedding band got electrocuted during a wedding in Faridabad on Monday afternoon. Tasked with holding lights and umbrellas at the wedding in the Junhera village in Ballabgarh, they died due to a short circuit, police said.
Police identified the victims as Attru (50) and Akbar (27), both hailing from a village in Etah in Uttar Pradesh. The two men were rushed to a nearby hospital but declared dead on arrival.
The duo lived in close quarters on the streets in Gurgaon. Akbar, along with his wife and four daughters and one son, came to Gurgaon five years ago to escape from money lenders. He lived on the city streets with his family and worked as a daily wager with a new job every day. He begged for money on days he had no work.
On Monday, he and Attru, along with two others, stood holding the lights at the wedding. “He was to get Rs 500 to hold the lights through the wedding,” said Akbar’s elder brother, Badshah (40). A salesman in Jaipur, Badshah, said that one of the other band members informed the family about the incident. “I rushed to the spot to see my brother. My brother and Attru were neighbours, and the other men working with them hail from their village, too,” said Badshah.
Attru arrived in Gurgaon a week ago. According to Badshah, two years ago, Attru, after borrowing money, started selling bangles on his bicycle. But during the pandemic, his small business suffered losses, and he allegedly had to borrow more money to survive. “The lenders started threatening him. They would ask him to repay the money daily, with more interest. So, he came to Gurgaon to earn money. Little did he know that he would never return,” said Badshah.
A report seeking an inquest has been filed under Section 174 of CrPC at the Tigaon police station. “As per our investigation, there was no conspiracy, and this is an accident,” said station house officer Satyapal.
