The following contains spoilers for Batman/Catwoman #12, now on sale from DC Comics

Batman is typically portrayed as a loner within the superhero community. Even after gaining an entire family of sidekicks and partners, his dark and gloomy demeanor still hasn’t budged. This behavior sometimes isolates Batman from his superhero allies. But there’s one friendship that every variant of Batman takes more seriously than others.

Batman/Catwoman #12 (by Tom King and Clay Mann) reveals the low-key details of how Batman and Catwoman were finally married. Notably, it also reveals that Superman and Lois Lane were the only two people who were informed of the wedding — proving just how important the Man of Steel is to the Dark Knight.

Batman/Catwoman spent twelve issues delving into a possible future where Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle were able to tie the knot. Despite their relationship falling apart in the core DC Universe, Batman/Catwoman #12 reveals that in this timeline, Bruce and Selina decided to get married on their own terms. Visiting a small chapel in Gotham, Selina asks for the “Batrimony” service, which means their wedding license and pictures will be Batman-themed. Although Bruce is initially tempted to just pay for witnesses to be present at the ceremony, Selina convinces him that their friends Clark and Lois should join them and they can do so at a literal moment’s notice.

Bruce quietly tells Clark “we’re doing it” and before he can finish speaking, Clark and Lois arrive, dressed and ready for the ceremony. While Lois and Selina catch up, Clark tells Bruce a story about “hope” seemingly messing with his friend. It’s an incredibly sweet moment and it implies that Clark and Lois are the only people the titular couple would be willing to share their initially private moment with. It speaks to the strong friendship between Superman and Batman and the fact that Clark was so prepared for the event, highlights how deeply connected the two heroes are.

While he’s not serving as Batman’s best man (a role that was meant for Alfred Pennyworth in their original wedding attempt, but is dead in this timeline), Superman is clearly established as the one person Batman would want to see by his side. It’s a touching moment that seems to codify the idea that Batman and Superman are best friends in the superhero community — a concept with a lot of history in the DC Universe. Although post-crisis and post-Flashpoint versions of the DC Universe would often pit Superman and Batman against one another, straining their relationship.

But in recent years, DC has renewed Superman and Batman’s bond — to the point where even their sons have become best friends. This makes Superman’s willingness to drop whatever he was doing to make sure he’s there for the Dark Knight and his bride a perfectly fitting gesture. Recent stories have also drawn attention to Batman’s need to have real superhero friends instead of just colleagues, and Superman seems more than happy to fill that role. This important occasion cements that Superman and Batman really are the World’s Finest friends.
