Sophie and Jesse figure out their relationship while Valentina and Charlie talk about having kids in the How I Met Your Father season 1 finale.

Instead of starting with Future Sophie explaining what happened with her date with Jesse like where the last episode left us, the How I Met Your Father season 1 finale begins with The Captain and Becky dividing their assets up due to their separation. Becky only wants three things from The Captain and that is “boats, boats, boats.”
At this point Future Sophie’s son interjects and the main story gets back to the forefront.
How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 10: Was Sophie stood up?
At the restaurant, Jesse finally arrives and explains how he was delayed because of the train. He also comes clean about Meredith and her song while also explaining how he got his closure.
Future Sophie narrates that they decided to take things slow which naturally jumps to them in Sophie’s bed about to go for round two. In the middle of the night, Sophie (who is the big spoon on Jesse) wakes up and revels in her place in the world when Jesse ruins it by saying “I love you, Sophie” in his sleep.
In the morning, Sophie makes Jesse leave practically immediately because she is freaking out about Jesse being emotionally available.

In his apartment, Sid and Hannah are trying to figure out how they will make their relationship work while Hannah is still in California for another year with her fellowship. After some talking it sounds like they are on the same page and will make it work.
Down at Pemberton’s, the engaged couple is meeting with their wedding planner where they find out how big the check is going to have to be for both of their ceremonies. The change of plans with Hannah’s fellowship is just making their wedding planning all the more difficult.
Across town, Ellen is returning to her apartment after an interview she struggled with, but she did find a stray cat outside so that was reassuring for her. Charlie is still awake with Valentina sleeping and the Brit explains to his roommate that he does not want children but his girlfriend does.
Ellen tries to assure Charlie that their relationship is still new and opinions can change. However, this is when Valentina wakes up and begins acting maternally towards the kitten, freaking out Charlie and Ellen.
After listening to Valentina be very motherly to Ellen’s new feral emotional support animal, Charlie finally comes clean about how he doesn’t want kids. Valentina is hurt and taken aback since she wants a full life and to her, that means she has a big family and successful career.
It turns out they both want two different things and neither look to be budging.
How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 10: Sophie visits MacLaren’s
After spending the day getting ready for the art gallery tonight, Sophie heads over to Jesse’s apartment where she comes clean about being freaked out with Jesse saying he loves her. Jesse walks through how it might not be so crazy that he said it or thought it, especially since he turned down going on tour with his ex for her.
After Sophie invalidates Jesse’s feelings, he politely asks her to leave so Sophie heads down to MacLaren’s Pub downstairs where she runs into famous news reporter Robin Scherbatsky. Realizing she is allergic to the feral cat, Ellen decides to bring the feline somewhere safe when she runs into Rachel from episode five.
It turns out Rachel lost her cat and that is the one Ellen found and was giving away since the cat hates Ellen, something Ellen remarks Rachel has in common with her pet. Rachel admits she doesn’t hate Ellen but rather was weirded out by Ellen’s first impression and the two agree to give themselves another chance.
Since Robin misses the good old days, she invites Sophie to explain her love life. Sophie runs down everything like how Jesse said “I love you” in his sleep, which makes Robin explain how she once had a guy say “I love you” on their first date.
Robin gives Sophie some perspective about how Jesse gave her everything she wanted from a man, just a little faster than expected. Robin hits home the best when she says, “I have been married. I’ve been single. I have been everything in between. And the only decisions I regret making are the ones I made out of fear.”
Sophie finally gets the courage to go talk to Jesse and tell him he was right to feel those things when she sees him and Meredith kissing in the doorway. Sophie turns around to go back to the bar where Robin is still there closing her tab.
After Sophie explains, Robin gives her another great piece of advice and that is time is everything and sometimes timing is rude.
How I Met Your Father season 1 episode 10: Sophie’s spotlight
Once she is at the exhibition, Sophie tries to ignore any boy drama going on which is hard since her one photo in the hall is of Jesse. Charlie, Valentina, and Ellen arrive shortly after where they celebrate Sophie’s accomplishment.
Ellen also celebrates her romantic and professional wins tonight since she got the job in which she thought she tanked the interview for. Then Sid and Hannah arrive to announce they had a City Hall wedding and everyone rejoices about the love and saved financials.

Aside from everyone, Valentina asks about Jesse but Sophie says he is not coming but she doesn’t want to talk about it. Then Sophie makes a comment about Charlie and Valentina where Valentina breaks the news that they broke up too but they are not dwelling on that since tonight is all about Sophie and her photograph.
Future Sophie returns back to The Captain and Becky’s divorce proceedings, much to her son’s dismay. However, when The Captain tries to protect his ship in Australia since the marine biologists on that boat are doing great things, Sophie’s son realizes she is talking about the ship Ian is on from the start of the season.
The son asks if Becky let The Captain keep this boat, just as the audience sees Ian arrive at the art exhibition asking if this is a good time for Sophie.
