Harsh, direct sunlight can be a real pain in the neck to work with, especially when you are a wedding photographer and do not have much control over the timing or location of things. Whether you are a wedding or portrait photographer, check out this fantastic video tutorial that offers a lot of practical and helpful advice for taking compelling portraits in harsh sunlight.

Coming to you from John Branch IV Photography, this excellent video tutorial will show you some helpful tips for taking good portraits in harsh and direct sunlight. Unfortunately, this is something every wedding photographer is going to have to deal with at one point or another, and depending on your style of shooting, the time you have for photographs, if you have assistants, and more, there are a few ways of going about approaching this. One tip that really captured my attention is using posing to your advantage. Beyond the unflattering light, one problem is simply that the bright light will cause people to squint, which never makes for good photos. By getting the couple close to one another, you can use them to block the light and make it more comfortable for them to open their eyes normally. Check out the video above for the full rundown.
