With 20 bedrooms and ten bathrooms, the property has accommodated lots of famous faces.

The castle saw some big names walk through the doors including The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Pogues, Sinéad O’Connor and Dusty Springfield.

Cregg Castle, located at Corrandulla in Co Galway, was previously a wedding venue, guest house and events venue

It was built in 1648 by the Kirwin Family and is one of the 12 tribes of Galway.

But one of the most famous occupant of Cregg Castle Estate was the pioneering scientist, Richard Kirwan.

In 2006, the castle was bought for €5m and planning permission was given for 99 bedrooms and nine holes.

But as the Celtic Tiger collapsed, so did the hotel plans.

The castle also features an extensive range of traditional outbuildings and stores, a walled garden, stables, a chapel and a three bed gate lodge.

Alan Murray was Cregg’s live-in guardian and promoter for a decade and revealed the castle turned down numerous events.

The historic building has also been used for filming and photo shoots.

Most recently the castle was available to rent on Airbnb.

A night in the castle was a bargain at just €71.

One visitor said: “Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cregg’s castle, very unique. Alan was generous and helpful, and you are easy access to Galway and the surrounding area.”

‘RARE OPPORTUNITY’

Another said: “What a rare opportunity to stay in real castle — not one done up as a tourist attraction.

“The guest rooms are very bright, roomy, and comfortable with most 21st century conveniences (we were there in a heat wave – 3.5 ft thick walls kept us nice and cool).

“The host, Alan, is a charming artist. If you want to see the real Ireland and join the effort to keep these historical treasures upright, Castle Cregg is your place.”

‘RUSTIC’

While another added: “Alan describes the Castle well, it is rustic but clean, hospitable and historic.

“You cannot beat the value, location and experience.”
