The PGA Championship starts this morning at Southern Hills CC in Tulsa and while there are 156 golfers in the field, there’s one who will rightfully get the most attention for as long as he’s playing this week.
I’m talking, of course, about Tiger Woods.
Doesn’t it feel like he’s about to do something special at the year’s second major? I’m sure getting that feeling and the reason why I’m getting that feeling is because everything has seemed pretty normal so far for Tiger this week and normal for a man who could have lost a leg – or even, quite possibly, his life – in a car accident just last year is pretty darn good.
Tiger did something special last month when he made the cut at the Masters. Jordan Spieth had a great line yesterday about Tiger’s run at Augusta and how the GOAT made it to the weekend while a lot of other big-name players, including Spieth, did not.
The days leading up to Masters were intense, with everyone tracking Tiger’s every move during jam-packed practice rounds and live look-ins on the range. We examined each step he took and wondered how he’d be able to walk around the golf course and how he’d even be able to pull off any type of magic with his clubs.
This week we haven’t really had to keep a close eye on his health, which is incredible when you think about it. He said at the beginning of the week that he’s feeling stronger than he did at the Masters and he’s looked that way while walking the fairways and beating balls on the range.
He’s just had that look. You know, the one we’ve seen from him so many times during the years.
We love that look.
We live for that look.
Tiger had that same look on this very same course back in 2007 when he won the PGA Championship.
Now he’s back for more and we’re all very lucky to be able to watch the best who has ever done it tee it up once again. There’s just nothing like tracking Tiger as he makes his way through a round at a major championship. These are the best of days. These days are special. And these days aren’t promised to us so we have to enjoy the heck out of them.
While making the cut at the Masters was a huge step, it feels like getting in contention over the weekend at a major would be the next big step. So I ask this question – why can’t it be this week?
Tiger tees off at 9:11 am ET today with Spieth and Rory McIlroy, which should be some really good TV.
It could also be the start of something special. And I’m here for it. I’m here for all of it.
Tiger Woods, man. Let’s go.
