The couple put plans to get married in Gisborne this past summer on hold because of the restrictive gathering rules under the red light Covid setting.

Asked about her revised plans on AM on Monday, Ardern said: “It’s happening sometime.

“We haven’t set an exact date, but that’s more than anything just down to us getting ourselves organised,” Ardern said.

“There’s quite a bit going on in the country at the moment… So wedding planning isn’t the top of my list, but I can confirm we are absolutely still getting married.”

Ardern and her broadcaster fiance Gayford were engaged in Easter 2019 at Mahia, near Gayford’s hometown of Gisborne, with his grandmother’s engagement ring.

The country is still in the most restrictive red Covid traffic light setting. Cabinet is due to review the setting next Monday, and Ardern has said the plan was to move down to orange, and ultimately green, once it was safe to do so.

She also announced last week the easing of many restrictions under the red setting, including abolishing all outdoor gathering limits and doubling the indoor gathering limit from 100 to 200. Masks will no longer be required at outdoor venues.

Ardern has said in the past it was unlikely she would have a “traditional” wedding, saying she felt “a bit too old to have a bridal party”.

Ardern and Gayford have been together since 2012. Their daughter Neve Te Aroha Ardern-Gayford was born in June 2018.
