PLANNERS have received another application to turn a Southampton building into a wedding venue with seven hotel bedrooms for guests staying overnight.

Previous plans to convert the Italian-style complex at Bugle Street were rejected amid concerns over the proposed use of the site and the potential impact on people living nearby.

Now an updated application containing more information has been submitted by the Lovebug Group.

The Grade II-listed building was constructed in 1846 as the home of the Royal Southern Yacht Club but members moved to cheaper accommodation in the city after about 20 years.

It was subsequently used as a school and a merchant’s office.

The club eventually returned and remained there until 1947, when it moved to Hamble. Southampton University Air Squadron used the building as offices until 2013.

A design and access statement that forms part of the latest planning application says the conversion will provide much-needed event space, a wedding venue and hotel accommodation in a highly-accessible part of the city centre.

It adds: “The proposals will preserve the original features and architectural integrity of the building. All the original fireplaces and mouldings will be retained.

“The second and third floors are to be revised to provide seven guest bedrooms with en-suites, with a bridal suite at third floor level.”

The statement says the scheme will have less impact on the historic fabric of the building than a previously-approved plan to turn it into eight flats.

“Externally it will remain as it is to preserve the character of the conservation area, with minor internal alterations that will serve as an enhancement to the building.”

The scheme is outlined in a public notice published by the city council, which will determine the application.
