A NIECE of Gerry Adams has claimed a list of drug dealers under threat that was found in her home during a police raid was work-related.

Sinead Clarke (43) – whose father Liam Adams is the brother of the former Sinn Fein president – is standing trial on a charge of possessing documents or records likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

The items in question are Post-It notes which bore personal details of nine drug dealers in west Belfast which were located in Clarke’s home.

On the second day of the non-jury trial, she was called to the witness stand where she confirmed that at the time of the raid she worked for Conflict Resolution Services Ireland (CRSI), which promotes peaceful resolution to community conflicts through mediation.

Clarke was questioned by her barrister Stephen Toal about the raid on her White Glen home in Dunmurry on June 27, 2018 and about the notes found under a wedding journal on a bookshelf.

She said that part of her role within CRSI was to liaise with representatives from dissident republican groups, and to pass on any threats to the Base2 crisis intervention project.

Mr Toal asked Clarke how she came to be in possession of the Post-It notes bearing the names of people under threat.

She replied that a man who she knew called at her home and gave her a “little parcel” which contained “a list of the names of people who were under threat.”

“He was bringing it on behalf of a group I would have worked with. I knew who it was on behalf of,” she said.

When asked what she did with the list, Clarke said: “I immediately knew it had to be stored safely as I didn’t want it lying about. So, I stored them on the bottom shelf of my unit in my living room, under my wedding planner. I put it there to keep it safe.”

Clarke said she later went into the office to inform her boss about the list. She also said she made several attempts to contact a manager within Base2 to inform him, but this was unsuccessful.

Denying she had the list for any other reason than for a work purpose, Clarke accepted a suggestion that due to her inaction, none of the nine people on the list were ever notified of the threat.

“I messed up and I’m sorry about that. I should have brought that information to my workplace,” she said.

She was later asked if she had ever been arrested or had experience with the judicial system. Clarke said whilst she never been arrested before, she had been involved in a trial concerning her father Liam Adams. When asked had she co-operated with police on that occasion, Clarke replied: “Yes, absolutely and with my participation, he was convicted.”

Judge Geoffrey Miller KC said he wanted to reflect on the evidence and said he would give his judgement in the new year.
