Couples looking to make this New Year’s Eve extra special are in luck — a local events planning company is offering pop-up weddings at the Penticton Lakeside Resort, and one couple will win their celebration free of charge.

Janine Cumberland is a certified wedding planner and the owner of Paradox Events, which offers full-service help with everything from “I Do” days to corporate events to backyard barbecues.

This winter, she had the idea to offer a limited number of small weddings on Dec. 31, for anyone wanting to have an intimate nuptial experience at a beautiful venue. Chelsea Dumayne, event sales specialist with Paradox, said it felt like a great idea given New Year’s Eve is on a Saturday this year.

“We have up to seven time slots available to have your intimate elopement. It’s an all-inclusive package, which includes all the elements of a great wedding. The ceremony and reception space which will be beautifully decorated by ourselves here, in conjunction with Enchanted Florist [which Cumberland also owns],” Dumayne explained.

“The package also includes your ceremony officiant, photographer, DJ [Splendid Bastard], and as well you can customize your wedding songs and first dance, followed by a bubbly and canapé reception and a wedding cake.”

The base package costs $3,150 for 12 guests, but for increased pricing for up to 30 guests can be added, as well as additional food and beverage.

The Penticton Lakeside Resort did a pop-up wedding on Valentine’s Day this year at the Barking Parrot that was a resounding success. Cumberland wanted to take that up a notch.

“Why not ring in the new year? It’s a Saturday. We don’t have to worry about Sunday, Monday, you know, going to work, and it’s just something different rather than a New Year’s party,” Cumberland said.

“You can definitely get married and then go elsewhere to party. We also do have the option for a sparkler send off which is, you know, in conjunction to New Year’s Eve.”

There are seven time slots available, 90 minutes each, ranging from 12 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Dec. 31.

And one lucky couple will get their entire wedding fee reimbursed. Couples need to officially book to be eligible to win the cost back, but the one-in-seven odds are pretty good.

Cumberland has been running Paradox Events since 2010 and offers event services anywhere throughout the province.
