She met Lewis, a Maori builder and former sheep-shearer, while on a surfing holiday in Bali in 2000, and they were married on 31 July 2004. Rather than a grand royal wedding, Lady Davina chose to marry privately at the chapel of her childhood home at Kensington Palace, with just close family and friends in attendance, and none of the extended Royal Family. Sadly, her 102-year-old grandmother, Princess Alice, was considered too infirm to attend. Princess Anne’s ex-husband, Captain Mark Phillips, was among the guests – as were 36 of Lewis’s family who had made the journey from New Zealand.
The bride wore a simple but chic satin gown with sweetheart neckline and lace sleeves, and eschewed tradition by refusing to wear a tiara, instead weaving flowers into her hair, which was styled simply falling onto her shoulders. In a sweet nod to her new role as a stepmother, her 12-year-old stepson, Ari, was chosen to give a reading in Gaelic.
The couple went on to have two children, Senna and Tāne, but sadly divorced in 2018.
