How They Met

(Mykala) We met in 2016. We were introduced to each other by mutual friends.

(Zachary) I went to Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. Kayla went to Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina. I didn’t know it at the time but one of my best friends was dating one of Kayla’s best friends. I was at my friend’s house one day and he was on FaceTime talking with his friend. I asked her, “Hey, do you have any friends? Hook me up with one.”

She showed me a couple of different photos of her friends, and I was like, “No, that’s not the one.” Then I saw Kayla and said, “That’s the one right there. Hook me up with her.” She promised to tell Kayla about me and said that I should send her a message on Instagram. I messaged Kayla, but after two months, she hadn’t replied. When her friend asked her why she had not replied to me, Kayla said that she didn’t realize that I was the person she had told her about. Once she replied and we started talking, it was history from there.

(Mykala) I usually don’t respond to people I don’t know. So, once my friend told me who he was, I responded.

Their First Date

(Mykala) Our first date was about two months later. Zachery drove two and a half hours to visit me at school. We clicked instantly. We’re both big foodies and he took me to Tokyo’s, my favorite Japanese steakhouse. We tried different items on the menu and had a great conversation. He was very easy to talk to. It felt like we had already known each other for a long time.

(Zachery) I was the first person to introduce her to Saki. She had never had it until then, and yes, she enjoyed it.

This is “The One

(Zachary) When I met Kayla, I was in my prime years of college and didn’t have any intention of finding a wife. But after I talked to her, I didn’t want to talk to anybody else. Everybody else became irrelevant and I didn’t care about talking with them. I really knew that she was the one because I cared so much about her feelings.  I know how crazy that sounds, but I found myself caring about her way more than I had cared about anybody else. I couldn’t stop thinking about her.

(Mykala) For me, it was the fact that we really built a friendship first. It got to the point where the only time I wanted to go out and do anything fun, I wanted to do it with him. As long as I had him, then I was fine. He was the only one I wanted to talk to, and we told each other everything. That’s what did it for me.

The Proposal

(Zachery) I got her good. We had not really discussed getting married, but Kayla was hinting. She was always looking at rings and stuff. Little did she know, I had already purchased the ring. I had been scheming for a while. I had already I asked her dad for permission to marry her.

She had gone to the University of South Carolina for homecoming, and I drove to Rock Hill to hang out with her dad.  She thought I was at the house chilling, but I was waiting for her to leave. I asked him if I could marry his daughter and showed him the ring. That’s when her mother walked in, and they both saw it. So, they both knew for a couple of months before I proposed. Kayla was so lost and shocked; she couldn’t believe it.

Kayla had been a cheerleader at Clemson. We were living at Greenville at the time, and she would occasionally help with the local cheer program. I decided to utilize that to my advantage. I was working at Amazon. I planned to propose to her in December, which is our peak time of year. We were working 60 to 80 hours a week, so she knew I would not be able to be off.

I reached out to Kayla’s best friend, who would later become her maid of honor. I asked her to contact the head cheerleading coach at Clemson and see if they would help me set up the proposal. They called Kayla and told her that the coach had to go out of town on a recruiting trip and asked her to coach the game for him. They got me tickets to the game and walked me through the tunnel. While Kalya was recording and coaching, they had the Clemson mascot tap her on the shoulder. It was funny because she went right on working. So, the mascot kept tapping on her. Finally, she said, “What” and turned around. I was on one knee and proposed to her. She was shaking so much it was hard for me to put the ring on her finger. I had to hold her hand.

(Mykala) I was very surprised. I didn’t expect it at all. I started crying instantly.

Wedding Planning

(Mykala) It’s definitely been a process. We’ve been engaged since 2019, so we had a pretty long engagement with plenty of time to plan everything. I decided to do most of the planning on my own, then hired SDS Events to take over a month prior to the wedding. If I had to go back, I would probably let them plan the whole thing. It can be really stressful at times. Managing the guest list and their expectations is probably the most stressful part. My mom has been my hero through this whole process. She’s helped with just about everything from beginning to end. I’m extremely grateful to her for that.

The Wedding

(Mykala) Our day was PERFECT! We had an evening wedding that was mostly traditional. Special traditions included lighting the unity candle. We had about 130 guests including the Clemson Tiger.

(Zachary) Our friends and families got the chance to see how Kayla and I are in general. We’re really fun people whose relationship is based on a good solid friendship. That’s the foundation of everything.

(Mykala) I am just looking forward to a lifetime of fun. We share a lot of the same interests including traveling and trying new foods. He’s my best friend. Life is always easier and more fun when you’re with your best friend every day.

The Honeymoon

(MyKala) We will be leaving soon for our honeymoon. We’re going on a cruise!
