Dennis Rodman describes what his first wedding looked like, and even though it might not sound as much surprise, it was a pretty bizarre event after which Rodman went to McDonald’s and took a honeymoon trip to Europe by himself.
His daughter insisted he and his mom get married
Dennis Rodman is one of the most unique personalities in NBA history. He is one of the best defenders and rebounders of all time and one of the most flamboyant players equally famous as his teammate with the Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan. Rodman led a pretty crazy lifestyle dating several celebrities like Madonna and Carmen Electra, but his first marriage was something that he would love to forget and wished it never happened.

In his book “Walk On The Wild Side” Rodman describes what happened when he married his first wife, Annie Bakes, back in 1991. Rodman never really believed in a monogamous relationship but got married because his three-year-old daughter Alexis told him to marry her mom when they were in California. Rodman remembers how he didn’t want to do it but felt pressured and actually went through the whole process.
“Actually, Alexis was the one who talked me into it. She was three years old at the time, and the three of us were in Lake Tahoe, just on the Nevada side of the border with California, at the Chapel of the Bells, one of those cheesy places where you can get an instant license. I waited outside the chapel for like two hours, just sitting there, concentrating. My little girl kept saying, “ARE YOU GONNA GET MARRIED? YOU GONNA GET MAARRIED? “She just kept saying it over and over, and finally, I buckled. It was the worst. I wish I had been drunk cause if I was, I swear I would’ve never even gone to the chapel in the first place.
It wasn’t a romantic wedding
Rodman wouldn’t be Rodman if he didn’t make the entire wedding ceremony downright bizarre, especially with the way he was dressed for the ceremony. On top of that, unlike many other couples that have a large and expensive wedding, Rodman went to McDonald’s right after, had several cheeseburgers, and then went straight to Europe afterward, by himself.
It wasn’t exactly the most romantic wedding in the world. I went into the chapel wearing combat boots, shorts, a T-shirt, sunglasses, and a hat. Then after the ceremony I went to McDonald’s, got a couple of cheeseburgers, and prepared for the one-night honeymoon. The next day, I got on a plane for Europe—alone—and spent the next couple of weeks tripping around. “We never did have sex on our wedding night or anything, and the week after I came back from Europe, we stopped living together.”
His marriage with his first wife didn’t last long, but as we all know, Rodman later married himself when he showed up in a wedding dress, which was probably something he really wanted to do, unlike his first wedding ceremony. He also married Carmen Electra and Michelle Moyer afterward, which didn’t last too long. However, despite all that, stories like these showcase what a unique personality Rodman was in a sense; he never conformed to traditional beliefs and always did things his own way, rarely worrying what other people would think of him.
