A historic hotel, which dates back to the 1700s, has recently been named as the best place in the north for couples to tie the knot.
Sparth House, in Clayton-le-Moors, was given the title earlier this week at the English Wedding Awards.
The winners represent the industry’s gold standard that work tirelessly to meet the demands of the couples and their guests.

According to managing director, Olivia Grey, the venue was recognised for its tireless dedication to guests – as well as the historic and “gorgeous” property itself.
Olivia said: “To win an award after being closed for so many months in lockdown is a very proud moment for us.
“We were shocked to have won and we were incredibly grateful to even be nominated.
“The win has given us that kick before wedding season and it’s nice to have received it before the next few busy months.”
As the pandemic brought the wedding industry to its knees, Olivia and the team wanted to keep in touch with her wedding clients by hosting wedding and wine chats on Facebook live.
She said: “We hosted wedding and wine Facebook lives where we would answer their questions, keep them updated and also keep them excited about their weddings.
“The lives helped them to feel like they were in a bit of a community – we even had a groom mention them in his speech.
“It kept them ticking over in what would have been an awful time for our couples.”
Olivia says the history of the Georgian building is also a unique selling point for guests.
She said: “Obviously, it’s a very beautiful property and a blank canvas for guests to decorate as they want for weddings
“We’re also price competitive and don’t charge exclusivity fees or venue hires – we don’t charge the earth”
The building dates back to 1740 and has been used as a home, antiques house and tea room in its history.
It was once owned by Robert Cunliffe who was one of the first members of parliament for East Lancashire.
It has stood as a hotel and wedding venue for around 25 years and currently boasts 16 individually styled.
Olivia says the venue boasts numerous historic features, including furniture from the Titanic’s sister ship, RS Olympic.

The mahogany wardrobes and decadent light fittings came straight from the ship and are kept in room 22; the furnishings were purchased during the property’s time as an antiques house.
The garden, which is situated on three acres of beautiful grounds, is also home to statues which have been around for hundreds of years.
In addition to weddings, they also offer to host family celebrations, corporate events and private hire stays.
