An enchanting winter procession featuring colourful costumes has lit up the dark streets of a County Durham town.

Multicoloured umbrellas and mythical beasts all featured when Crook Winter Light Parade made a welcome return on New Year’s Eve.

People carried giant puppets, models of the sun and lanterns as live music played during the annual parade to see out 2022.

The event, which started in 2015, was a collaboration between professional artists and performers and talented young people, community groups and schools from Crook and the surrounding villages.

A spokesperson for the organisers at Jack Drum Arts said: “Crook Winter Light Parade is a highly anticipated annual cultural cornerstone of our community’s calendar which has been growing in scale and ambition since 2015.

“Each year we produce our enchanting procession transforms the streets of Crook into a Winter Wonderland.

“Complete with large-scale puppets, live music, song and dance our parade is a community event like no other and is our opportunity to do something really ambitious with our local community.”
